How to Draw a Dogs

How to Draw Dogs: I always start a dog drawing or any animal for that matter with a breakdown. I do this with basic shapes and lines which can be straight or curved.

I worked from a photograph of a Scottie Dog. I drew on typing paper for the initial sketch with a 2B pencil and then traced onto Bristol Board which is a card like, very smooth paper. I used 4H, 4B and 9B derwent graphic pencils for the finished piece. I also used a dry unscented tissue.

Now let's get started with the How to Draw Dogs
step by step drawing tutorial.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 1:
Here I use two ovals which I connect. This is the dog's head.

Now I use lines to divide the head. A horizontal line for the eyes with a vertical line showing where the centre of the forehead is. Another vertical where the centre of the snout is.
TIP: Mouse over the image to see the changes.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 9:
I use the drawing to guide me and complete this line drawing of the dog on Bristol board. You can trace this or draw freehand if you have the confidence. I use a 4H pencil for to draw on the Bristol board. This will appear very faint but that is what we want.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 10:
I take the 9B and loosely shade the whole drawing. I can still see the lines made with the hard pencil. Then I take a dry tissue and blend the soft pencil uniformly, trying not to smudge outside the lines.

Now I take another soft pencil (4B) which I blunt by rubbing it on a sheet of scrap paper and begin to add detail. I sketch the nose.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 12:
I add lines and overlapping lines without much pressure on the ears.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 13:
I sketch the eyes in. Note I create a simple highlight in both eyes. I did this by using less pressure where I want the highlights to be.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 14:
I go over the eyes with more pressure, darkening it. The thing here is to be patient and not try to go too dark too quickly.

I slowly build up the dark areas..

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 16:
I work in the same manner on the other eye slowly adding tone.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 17:
I switch to working under the head (where a human chin would be) again slowly building up with lines and overlapping lines.

How to Draw a Dogs
Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 18:
I work on the face building up lines. Here I am following the direction of the hair. This takes some observation of the subject but a very hairy dog makes this part easier.
How to Draw a Dogs
Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 19:
I continue in the same way until happy with the head. I often work on one part of an animal at once because then I know how dark I can go without ruining the paper. This also helps me make decisions about the other tones. Generally speaking establishing the darkest and lightest parts of a pencil drawing first is very helpful. I know that everything else lies between the two. This dog drawing is darkest in the eyes and lightest in the highlights. So I know that I will not make any other part of the drawing darker or lighter than these two extremes.

Pencil Dog Drawing Tutorial Part 20:
I use the same method on the body. A slow build up of lines. Because we have already laid down a base of tone I have much less work to do and can concentrate on the direction of the fur. Follow the next 5 illustrations.
